What Are Fractions?

Here is part 2 of that video

The definition of representing fractions is to draw/show the fraction in a picture like a shape. The different types of fractions are Improper fractions, Proper fraction and Mixed fractions.

1) An improper fraction is a fraction when the numerator (top number) is more than (>) the denominator (bottom number ).
2) An proper fraction is a fraction when the numerator is less than (<) the denominator.
3) An mixed fraction is a fraction with a whole number (1,3,8,6) and a proper fraction (1/3, 3/8, 5/10).

An example of a improper fraction is: {10/5}, {23/13}, {48/15}, {50/25},etc.
An example of an proper fraction is: {8/16}, {24/30}, {9/24}, {17/34},etc.
An example of an mixed fraction is: {1& 2/4}, {3& 4/6}, {2& 1/2}, {5& 2/3},etc.

How to Represent a Fraction
say you want to Represent 3/8. You will make a circle and divide it into 8 equal parts. Then you will shade 3 parts to represent 3/8 missing.

The definition for an equivalent fraction is a par of fractions when the top and the bottom number might be different but when you draw a picture they have the same value.  To do equivalent fractions, you will need to know your multiplication up to 12 and equivalent fractions mainly contain multiplication. Also when you divide or multiply both numerators and denominator by the same number, the fraction will keep it's value no matter what.
Comparing Fractions imageComparing Fractions imageComparing Fractions image
Comparing fractions isn’t as easy as a comparing regular numbers.
To compare fractions there are 2 main Strategies, Cross Multiplying and Decimal Division.
For example, let’s see which fraction is bigger. 4/6 or 3/10
Step 1:
Multiply The denominator of one fraction with the numerator of the other fraction

Step 2:
Multiply the denominator of the other fraction with the numerator of the fraction on the left.

Step 3:
Now you should 2 new numbers (10 x 4 = 40  and 6 x3 = 18). 40 is larger than 18 so 4/6 is the greater  fraction.

Proper Fractions

A proper fraction is when the numerator is less than the detonator. For Example: 2/8 The numerator (2) is bigger than the detonator (8)

Improper Fraction

Improper Fraction is when the numerator is greater than the detonator. For Example: 5/2 The numerator (5) is bigger than the detonator (2)

Mixed fractions

A mixed fraction is when there is a whole and fraction. For example: 3 1/3 There is a whole (3) and the fraction (1/3)

Convert Fractions (Mixed To Improper)

How to convert a Mixed fraction into a Improper fraction and into a fraction 5 3/9 is the mixed fraction (1) Multiply the whole number by the fraction denominator 5 x 9 = 45 (2) Add the numerator to the answer 45 + 3 = 48 (3) Write the answer on the numerator spot 5 3/9 = 48/9

Convert Fractions (Improper To Mixed)

Here's how you convert Improper Fractions Into Mixed Fractions. Eg. 21/4 = ? 1)Divide the numerator (21) by the denominator (4) which will be 5 . 2) Write down the whole number (5) as the whole number in the mixed fraction. 3) Then write down any remainder above the denominator (1 remainder) and the answer will be 5 and 1/4. Eg. 21/4 = 5 & 1/4

Okay now lets Review everything we've learned.

Proper Fraction: A proper fraction is when the numerator is smaller than the denominator.

Improper Fraction: A improper fraction is when the numerator is greater than the denominator.

Mixed Fraction: A mixed fraction is a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction

Representing Fraction: Representing a fraction is when you draw a picture that relates to the problem. Say you have 3/8 of pie to draw you will make a circle and divide it into 8 pieces then shade in 3. Thats Representing 3/8.

Equivalent Fraction: An equivalent fraction is a pear of fractions when the top and bottom number might be different but have the same vale.

Comparing Fraction: There are two ways to compare fractions for example Cross multiplying and comparing decimal value.
